The Dusi Canoe Marathon is an epic 3 day kayak adventure along the uMsunduzi and Umgeni Rivers, from Pietermaritzburg to Durban. This kayaking adventure often ends with tales of excitement, bravado, courage and humour. The first day is 45 km which includes roughly 8 km of portaging with your kayak, with shorter portaging sections on days two and three. Day two will test your kayak skill and is also 45 km and ends with a 10 km stretch of flat water on the Inanda Dam. Day three provides the kayaker with tough choices – a tough portage or potential kayak breaking rapids – but the 35km of clean cold dam released water is refreshing and offers an adrenalin rush for all kayakers.
The dates for the 2011 Dusi are Thursday 16th to Saturday 18th February 2012. The canoes-online tour itinerary will be announced soon, however paddlers only need to get to Johannesburg Airport 2 days prior to start and we will take care of the rest including the provision of your kayak. A pre-race river kayak trip with a former champion will provide you with the opportunity to learn the route and test you skills in some of the key rapids. For anyone who prefers to sit in the back of a Tandem Kayak K2, experienced kayak drivers can be provided.
Paddlers wishing to compete in any of the tour events will need to meet the race organiser’s proficiency and safety requirements.
